Read the following considerations
about Capitalism
1) Capitalism is the destroyer of the self, and thus the destroyer of love; it values men not on their own self worth, but on the bankability of their labor. They have been “transformed into a commodity”, their life is an investment which must bring [back] the maximum profit obtainable under existing market conditions. This leaves the worker pervaded by the deep sense of insecurity, anxiety, and guilt. [Adapted]
2) Capitalism alienates human beings; it corrupts the individuals’ selfhood by allowing it to be governed by others. It injects the self full of desire and hope for a better tomorrow that unfortunately will never come. Love is a means of escape for people to vainly remove themselves from a society that enslaves the spirit. Without the self, without identity, without our own nature, true love is impossible because the relationship is not from, as Fromm puts it, “the center of [ones] existence.” (p. 86) This empty love is a direct result of the harmful effects that capitalism has on western society.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Based on these ideas of "Love in a Capitalist World" and all the discussions we had in class about "Life and Capitalism", including the one regarding the film American Beauty, write down a paragraph or an essay with the purpose of discussing the following question/s:
What/Where are human human values
in our materialistic world?
in our materialistic world?
In our materialistic world, human values are based on money.
Very few people think in terms of humanity. Why does this happen?

ResponderExcluireducation,LOVE, culture, nature for example are things that has not a economic valor, so has not valors to our attualy society
ResponderExcluirI do not want to defend the capitalism, but this system is very efficient when it comes to relations of power. Life in society is very complex, so we need an axis of organization. However, Can love be treated as a social product?
ResponderExcluirThe brilliant French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, declared that the chalice of courtly love—and all the romantic sentiments and eroticism that fill it—is an illusion. It’s impossible to find love through sexuality. It’s impossible to use your body to hide your emotional pain. It’s impossible to heal your own emotional brokenness through the body of another person as mortal and broken as you are.
Love and capitalism are two words that, for me, can not be put together.Love is a real expression of happyness and all which is good while capitalism is a system of government that can destroyed a family like we sow in "American Beauty". In it a family was almost destroyed because the father, who works so much and had not time to be with his daughter and the mother, who worked selling houses and had not a good relationship with her husband. Why they work so much? meybe for have a good economy condition for their family. But, what family?
ResponderExcluirIn a capitalist society it is common to hear people saying that they gave not time to do anything. It is what capitalism do with us.It doesn´t allow us to think and act against it one. WE have not time to live.
Bruna França
Capitalism is a form of economy. I think it is efficient, but the excess or its distortion is harmful. We are animal too. Therefore, we compete for place, love and various things. Capitalism brings us competition. But we are “human animal”. So, we don’t live just for compete. We need some human values like respect, love, solidarity, compassion…and it completes us too. Unfortunately we are living just for having and not for being someone. We forgot what make us happiness and we permit that various useless things fill our free time. We are forgetting important values. Capitalism like Sinval said is efficient for power and it is important too but loving demand more than power…Loving demand us give ourselves up. Thus, I don’t think capitalism and love are opposite things. I think we need to review our form of managing our time, our choices and ourselves.

ResponderExcluirCapitalism always influence in the peoples life, because we live in a capitalism world and we need work to get money to survive and for have a good life. The people work very hard for get a best live for their family and don’t have many time to stay with their family, this way, the capitalism influence negatively and can destroy family, like in the film “American beauty”. But it depends of the people, because many people work very much and can stay a time with their family, in the lunch or dinner, for example, the family can stay together and talk about the day, the school, the work… and is not difficult take a time in the weekend for go out with the family. So, the capitalism can influence the people relationships but the human values can’t be based only in capitalism but in love and respect for the people.

ResponderExcluirThe great problem of humanity is not capitalism, but the sad human behavior.
ResponderExcluirThere is a huge gap between awareness of ethical and moral values and capitalist values.
People think of doing more and more money. Forgot love.
Our problems are people, do not blame the system. We are the system.
To change it is necessary to change our lives and our behavior.
We have to live with love. We need to think about other people.
We need to stop interfering in other forms of life. There's a world outside us.
I agree with Paula Rejane, "We need some human values such as respect, love, solidarity, compassion. And these values should be in all of us."
We are a mistake and unfortunately I am part of the problem. We need to evolve to continue to live.
I think that the capitalism can be summarized in one only phrase: you worth what you have. Nowadays people don’t have time for anything, because a lot of them are workaholics; it is a war day by day, where everybody is struggling for better days to make a living. Humans are forgetting to have a good time with their family, friends, and even time for holidays. The capitalism is making people be like machines, they just want to work, to build up their careers and to grow up. With that humans are losing their sensitivity, they don’t have feelings with you- their fellow creature. But I hope that the capitalism won’t destroy the love in people and that we can construct a better world.
ResponderExcluirI think the capitalism system is not a problem. I like live in a capitalist country, because I can do things I like, I can buy I like and say things that I want. I think the capitalism is more liberal than socialism and communism. I think the problem is a people, because they want always be more important, more rich .... than other people is not good, because the people are forgetting their friends and family. thus, I think the problem are inside in a mind the people, I think that is a human instinct and not the foult the capitalism system.
ResponderExcluirrogerio.
Tody is very difficult to have a relationship without the capitalist influence. When we see a old woman with a young man(or the opposite)we ever think that the reason is the money. We don´t believe that it can be true.
ResponderExcluirThe capitalism manage people lifes.Everybody thinks in money, sucess, status, good aspect, good clothes,so we don´t measure endeavors to obtain what we want. The values stay after,we forget nature, healthy, love and other things to to obtain what we want.
Many people try change the world conscience, but this is very difficult because we don´t go to leave our privileges for results with long time.
I think capitalism isn’t the best way for organize society. Because, in this economic system, money is more important than human being. For example, many people lost their jobs in last economic crisis for to save companies.
ResponderExcluirRelationships are affected for capitalism. People have no time for others, or treat others like objects and merchandise. If money is put in first love is impossible, because love needs people in first.
There is a nice little movie in youtube about this:
"Story of Stuff"

Capitalism is an efficient system governing the economy. However, it has shaped a generation of consumerism and established standards for society, which managed to turn love into a commodity.
ResponderExcluirToday love is not granted, it will purchase, through the fruits of the capitalist system such as mobile phones, cars, clothes, etc. Capitalism creates commemorative dates stimulating consumption and strengthening the bourgeois. The fact is that a very large portion of the population is alienated and engaged in the esthetic standards, economic, social and political aspects of capitalist society.
It is necessary to review these concepts to try to restore human values so essential, but at the moment is being forgotten.
Capitalism ideas and philosophy are instructed in the education of people since their childhood. Like this we´re grown up seeing and knowing that society are divided between richers and poors, used to live next to people with the same social class of us and distant of people with a different social class. This brings to people´s life the sense of difference, with all it´s prejudices, and the sense of the social inequality that exists in our society. Because of this, competivity it´s something that is so much incentivated , making people lost important values like friendship, humanity and solidarity. This due to fact this competitiveness makes people became more and more individualist, thinking only in themselves. But it doesn’t means that human values are complete lost. Even with the constant degeneration of the human values, still exists true love and friendship between some people. The great problem is that human beings are losing their place in our society by the increasing of the capitalism ideology. It´s necessary do something against this situation, mainly acting on schools, on the formation of people, trying to recover this values.
ResponderExcluirAt all its existance, humanity created systems of government to
ResponderExcluirtry to organize the society as better as it can. The truth is that the
power is been disputed since the oldest times and it´s have ever been
concentrated in a dominant class's hands. Like Nicolau Maquiavel said,
the politics is a consequence of the society and isn´t possible to
imagine an ideal system like the Greek used to do. A lot of men had to
leave his families to fight at the Greek armies, a lot of people was
burnt in the middle age (when the society was not "comercial" like today), a lot of families was desintegrated by the industrial work (not remunerated) at the Socialist Russia, the population in Cuba sees
(or better... doesn't see) the censorchip of the totalitarism there.
How we can see, there is no perfect system if the humanity is not
perfect. It's not different on the capitalism.
Is clear to me that the materialism is a consequence of the people's
desire to facilities (mainly technological) that we only can use because of the economic development of this system (that doesn't promove the equality, just like all the other practic kinds of government). Thus, the materialism doesn't mean that the human values doesn't exist anymore, but the opposite, the conciousness of better lifes is changing, like the ecological and the social conciousness, just because taking care of the world is a good way of marketing nowadays.
So, Capitalism is not a worse system than the others of the humanity's history. The indifference about the social problems is not fault of the system, but of the natural's egohism of the men, which have been creating more and more methods of alienation to promote the minority's power.

ResponderExcluirThe capitalism is necessary, beacause is the one of the people can have the life as how much they work and are prepair for that.. At least this was the intention... And.. in some cases it´s works..
ResponderExcluirBut it´s true.. there are so many person who work.. work.. study.. and still with the same poor life.. But we hope that we gonna have a better world in a close future..
And is also true, that have a lot of person who don´t have a true love, and think the love is just a complement to have a good status..However, the love is a complement.. but a complement of the life.. and in the world like ours, we need to have someone to talk and entrust.. We need to have someone who really care with us.. And.. just the love can do it..
We need to change the world.. it´s the reality..
Currently the values are esquecidos. The people think in themselves, they are individualistas. And think that capitalism has influence over this, because capitalism makes people think only of profit, just think of enriuquecer. And people to fight for this goal (profit, enrichment),the people don´t think in media, don´t think other people. The capitalism made the world a materialistic world, if only preoculpa with having, with much material and not with the valores.O capitalism has made us lose our values and so it is difficult to say where are the human values!
ResponderExcluirThe biggest objective of the capitalism is the consumption. To consume it is necessary to have money. It is in this search for acquiring corporeal properties that the human values lost or are left of side, therefore what the people possess become more important of what they really are. And with this the relations human beings as friendship, solidarity, and fellowship are ignored.
ResponderExcluirI believe that the fact of few people to think about terms of humanity is because of the education. Therefore the biggest concern of the majority of the people is the formation of the individual to obtain a place in the work market, being objectified the professional and social ascension, emphasizing the individuality and the competitiveness. Being forgotten the base human values that make possible an accomplishment and happiness. This negation of values in the formation of the individuals has caused professional frustrated and unfortunate persons.
